What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance gives you extra protection while you’re travelling. It gives you peace of mind and covers you in case things going wrong when you least expect them.
Travel insurance includes a range of things. From minor problems, such as missed airline connections and delayed luggage, to more serious and costly issues. These include injuries or major illness that could lead to expensive fees if you need treatment abroad.
You can choose from single trip or annual travel insurance, which gives you multi trip cover. You can add extras if you need it, including winter sports, cruise and business cover. These are available for an extra cost.

Who needs travel insurance?
Travel insurance gives you peace of mind in case something unexpected happens. Having an accident abroad, losing your passport or being delayed can be expensive to deal with. You might need legal support if you’re injured and if it wasn’t your fault. It’s important you and your family are all covered and have that added reassurance.
Types of travel insurance
Santander Travel Insurance includes
- Unlimited medical expenses if you’re injured or are ill abroad
- Up to £5,000 if you have to cancel or cut short your holiday. This may be because of circumstances you weren’t aware of when you took out the policy
- Personal property of up to £2,000 (a single item limit of £300 applies) that is lost, stolen or damaged. You're not covered for money, passports or valuables left unattended (unless locked away)
- Essential items of clothing, toiletries or medication of up to £200 if your bags are delayed by the airline or carrier for 12 hours or more
- Overseas legal expenses up to £25,000 if you’re injury caused by a third party
- Travel delay payment of £20 (up to £250) for every 12-hour delay to public transport, including flight delays
What you’re not covered for
- If you travel against your doctor’s advice, you must tell Chubb about your medical conditions. Please do this at the time you buy your policy or if you have any health changes before you travel
- For travel to an area where the FCDO has advised against all travel or all but essential travel (except for cancellation claims)
- Financial failure of your travel provider or organiser
- A cancellation claim for illness without evidence
- Valuables left unattended

Why choose Santander?
We’ll pay up to £5,000 if you have to cancel your trip or cut it short for a reason listed within the policy wording. We’ll refund the cost of travel, accommodation and any pre-paid tours you didn’t use. We’ll also pay for accommodation and travel to get you home to the UK. We’ll only do this if someone you’re travelling with dies, or suffers a serious injury or illness.
Several optional cover extensions are available for an additional cost. These include:

COVID cover you have with a Santander Travel Insurance policy:
- Cancellation costs, including pre-booked tours, if you (or someone you are travelling with) get COVID or have to self-isolate, and you miss your holiday
- Medical costs if you get COVID on holiday abroad
- Travelling home and extra accommodation costs if you get COVID or have to self-isolate and can’t return home on time

What’s not covered:
You won’t have any COVID cover if the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against travelling to your destination.
You’re also not covered:
- for costs you can claim back from anywhere else (including a credit from your travel provider)
- if you choose not to travel
- if you can’t travel due to restrictions put in place by your travel provider, any government, or any country
- for financial failure of your travel provider

Before booking a trip, check the FCDO website for travel advice. You can check the country you plan to visit for the latest updates and whether it's safe to go there. These updates can change regularly and at short notice. You should check your cancellation rights with your travel provider before booking a holiday abroad.
