University of Essex breaks new ground with sustainability linked support

Founded in 1963, the University of Essex is a dual-intensive university with three campuses in Essex (Colchester, Southend-on-Sea and Loughton). The University is ranked 25th in the UK for research quality (Times Good University Guide), 25th for international outlook (Times Higher Education World University Rankings) and is top 40 in the UK (Complete University Guide 2023).
Having built a long-standing relationship with Santander, the University of Essex was looking for support with its capital working requirements.
The support provided by Santander is significant as it will allow the University to invest in our overarching priorities of excellence in education and research while also supporting our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) aims. Santander continues to support and guide us in a highly efficient, friendly, and professional manner.

After a competitive tender process, the financial boost from Santander will enable the University to maintain its transformational capital investment programme, which includes a number of projects which form part of the University’s sustainability strategy.
This will be a key focus for the University over the coming years and is also a great example of how Santander is helping support the sustainability aims and objectives of its clients.
We’re delighted to be able to provide a five year sustainability linked revolving credit facility to one of the UK’s leading universities. The University of Essex has an ambitious but highly achievable capital programme over the next five years that will both improve the student experience, upgrade its estate, and move the University forward at pace on its sustainability journey. We’re looking forward to supporting the University on these projects over the coming years, and hope that it’s the start of a deep and prosperous relationship.
